The Superman Position: Graeme Obree, The Flying Scotsman

In cycling, victory is not always decided only by strong legs. Sometimes, the winning difference is an idea that looks strange, risky, or even impossible at first.

One of those ideas came from Scottish cyclist Graeme Obree. He developed a riding position that later became known as the “Superman position”. In this position, the rider stretches both arms forward and extends the body as much as possible, reducing air resistance. Visually, it looks like Superman flying.

Obree was not an ordinary athlete. He built his own bicycle, “Old Faithful”, by himself and with limited resources. His main goal was simple: improve aerodynamics and reach maximum speed on the track.

What Else Did Obree Create?

Obree did not stop with one idea. He introduced several innovative approaches to cycling:

  • The “Tuck” position
    In this position, the rider keeps the arms very close to the body, under the chest. This compact shape significantly reduces air resistance.
  • The “Superman” position
    After the “Tuck” position was banned, Obree created an alternative position. The body was more stretched out, making the rider even more aerodynamic.
  • DIY engineering
    His bicycle was not a standard factory-made bike. “Old Faithful” was a handmade, experimental machine that challenged the standards of its time.

At that time, these ideas were rare in professional sport, and many people found them difficult to understand.

What Titles Did He Win?

Obree’s achievements were as impressive as his inventions:

  • He broke the Hour Record twice, in 1993 and 1994;
  • He became World Champion in the individual pursuit twice, in 1993 and 1995;
  • He won several medals at the Track Cycling World Championships.

His success came from the way he combined technology, body position, and physical ability into one system. He did not wait for better equipment. He created it himself.

Why Were His Positions Banned?

Obree’s positions proved so effective that the Union Cycliste Internationale, known as the UCI, eventually banned them. The reason was that these techniques changed the rules of competition and created an advantage that was difficult for other riders to match.

A Film Worth Watching

Obree’s story also inspired cinema. A film about his life, The Flying Scotsman, was released in 2006.

The film shows not only his sporting success, but also his personal struggles, psychological difficulties, and the pressure faced by someone who constantly tried to think differently.

In Short

Graeme Obree was not only a cyclist. He was an innovator, an inventor, and a person who challenged existing rules.

His “Superman position” is no longer used in professional track cycling, but the idea behind it is still alive: speed is not only in physical strength. Speed is also in the way we think.
