Forest Trails, Gravel Roads and a True MTB Adventure in Racha

Some cycling routes are just rides. Others become experiences you remember long after they are over.

This route is exactly that kind of adventure. I first planned and tested this route in 2021 by going solo. Of course, the route planned on the map was different from reality and exceeded expectations. Fully gravel roads, deep forest sections, the smell of pine trees, serious elevation gain, demanding climbs, fast downhills, and nature that changes almost every kilometer.

This is not an easy Sunday ride. It is a real adventure route for riders who enjoy MTB, gravel roads, forest riding, elevation gain, and challenging but rewarding routes.

Route Overview

  • Start: Kveda Tlughi, Racha
  • Distance: 32 km
  • Uphill: 1,070 m
  • Downhill: 1,070 m
  • Surface: Fully gravel route
  • Difficulty: Challenging but very rewarding
  • Main highlight: Satsalike Mountain

Starting from Kveda Tlughi

The route starts in Kveda Tlughi, Racha. From the very beginning, this place creates the feeling of a real adventure. The village is surrounded by forests and mountains, so even before the ride begins, you already feel that this is not going to be an ordinary route.

Near Kveda Tlughi, there is a natural cave that is absolutely worth visiting. If you are in this area for the first time, make sure to include the cave before or after the ride. It adds a mysterious and wild feeling to the whole experience.

Shaori Lake Is Nearby

Another beautiful highlight close to the route is Shaori Lake, one of the most scenic places in Racha. If you have extra time, stopping by the lake before or after the ride is a great idea.

In the morning, the lake can be covered with mist, while sunset brings soft light and beautiful reflections. This route can easily become a full day adventure trip, combining cycling, a cave, forests, mountains, and a lake in one experience.

A Fully Gravel Route Through the Forest

One of the best things about this route is that it is almost completely gravel. You ride through forest roads, rocky sections, wide gravel tracks, and quiet places where you simply want to stop and listen to nature.

The smell of pine trees is especially strong inside the forest sections. The air feels cool, fresh, and clean. In some places, it feels less like riding on a road and more like moving directly through the heart of the forest.

If you are lucky enough to get foggy weather, the whole route turns into a different world. Mist between the pine trees, silent forest roads, and endless gravel sections create an atmosphere that feels like stepping into the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale. In some moments, it is hard to believe places like this exist in Georgia.

The Climb to Satsalike Mountain

This route is physically demanding. Covering 1,070 meters of climbing in 32 km means that energy management is very important.

Some climbs are long and steady, while others become steeper and more difficult because of the gravel surface. This is a route where leg power alone is not enough. You need a good pace, smart gearing, and the ability to save energy for later sections.

The most memorable point of the climb is Satsalike Mountain. From here, panoramic views open across the entire Imereti region. On a clear day, the horizon stretches far away, with mountains, forests, valleys, and villages forming one huge landscape.

This is the moment when the tiredness starts to disappear. You understand that the hard climb was completely worth it.

Downhills That Make Everything Worth It

The harder the climb, the better the descent. On this route, the downhill sections are one of the main rewards.

Some parts are fast and flowy on wide gravel roads. Others are more technical and require attention, braking control, and good bike handling. If you enjoy MTB riding, these descents will give you a lot of emotion.

Extra care is needed on the downhills because the gravel can be loose in some places, rocky in others, and slippery after rain.

What Bike Works Best for This Route?

The best choice for this route is an MTB. A hardtail is enough if you have good riding skills, while a full suspension bike will make the descents and rocky sections more comfortable.

An experienced gravel rider can try it on an aggressive gravel bike, but this is not the easy option. Wide tires, strong brakes, and low climbing gears are very important here.

  • Hardtail MTB is a good choice
  • Full suspension is more comfortable on descents
  • Gravel bike only for experienced riders
  • Tubeless setup is recommended
  • Spare tube or repair kit is necessary
  • Strong brakes and reliable tires are important

Why This Route Is Worth Riding

Because this is more than just a workout. It is a full adventure where you leave the city behind, enter the forest, gain elevation, get tired, and finally receive the kind of emotion that an easy route cannot give you.

This route has everything a great MTB day needs: gravel, forest, silence, views, a mountain, a lake, a cave, hard climbs, and fast downhills.

Tips Before You Go

  • Bring enough water
  • Download an offline GPS map
  • Check the weather in advance
  • Be extra careful in fog or rain
  • Riding alone is not recommended
  • Start early in the morning
  • Bring a fully charged phone
  • Take food or energy bars
  • Carry a tire repair kit

Final Thoughts

If you love forests, gravel roads, MTB, serious elevation gain, fast downhills, and routes where every kilometer feels like an adventure, this ride from Kveda Tlughi to Satsalike Mountain should be on your list.

It is not an easy route. But that is exactly what makes it special.

The smell of pine trees, misty forest roads, the cave near Kveda Tlughi, Shaori Lake, Satsalike Mountain, and panoramic views over Imereti create one of the most memorable MTB experiences in Racha.
